What your blood pressure numbers actually mean

“120 over 80” gets said a lot — but what do those two numbers actually measure? Here’s the plain-language version we share with patients every week.

The two numbers

The top number (systolic) is the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The bottom number (diastolic) is the pressure between beats, when your heart rests. Both matter — and one reading on one day matters much less than the pattern over time.

Getting a reading you can trust

  • Sit quietly for five minutes first, feet flat on the floor, back supported.
  • Rest your arm at heart level and skip caffeine for 30 minutes beforehand.
  • Take two readings a minute apart, and jot both down with the date and time.

High blood pressure usually has no symptoms — which is exactly why we check it at every visit. If your home readings are trending up, don’t panic and don’t ignore it: bring your log to your next appointment and we’ll look at the pattern together.
